Vikinger på takkeferd

Kay Morten Aarskog (31), synes det er for mye vaffelsteking og kos i kristne miljøer. I går ankom han Newcastle i et vikingskip som har seilt fra Norge for å takke engelskmennene.

Søndag klokken 14.00 seilte vikingskipet Gaia opp elva Tyne og ble møtt av flere tusen mennesker langs elva. På en offisiell seremoni ved Millennium Bridge ble engelskmennene takket for deres bidrag i å gi evangeliet til Norge.

Byens ordfører, biskopen av Newcastle og stortingsrepresentant, Sir Alan Beith var der for å ta imot takken. Et brev fra biskop Ole Christian Kvarme ble lest opp og biskop Ingeborg Synøve Midttømme var også tilstedet. 300 nordmenn var også der for å takke, de har allerede vært i Newcastle en uke og samarbeidet med ca 70 lokale kirker. De har blant annet hatt ferieklubb for barn, velsignet lokalsamfunnet og arrangert eventer for ungdom.

Kay Morten, som står i spissen for denne takkeferden, har en karriere som narkolanger og kriminell bak seg. Han fikk forandret livet sitt for ni år siden da han møtte Jesus. Den samme Jesus som de norske vikingene møtte gjennom engelske munker og prester for 1000 år siden – og som gradvis forandret Norge. Til daglig er Kay Morten senterleder ved Borgen, ett av Ungdom i Oppdrags sentre i Norge.

- For fire år siden satt jeg og kona mi Hilde og tenkte på hva vi ville invester i – hva vi ville bruke livene våre på? Vi kom fram til at vi ville trene ungdom til å kjenne Jesus. Vi vil at den generasjonen som vokser opp nå skal vite hva Gud og Bibelen sier om hvordan leve livet. Hvordan være en tannlege, pappa, ektefelle, politiker, eller hvordan jobbe med fattigdom? Jeg tror at de prinsippene som forandret vikingene – er de som også kan gi håp til Europa i dag.

Stine Aronsen (18) og Øyvind Walland (18) fra Tromsø er to av ungdommene som har vært med på vikingseilaset med Gaia.

- Hvorfor ble dere med på dette?

- Jesus har vært med å forandre meg – jeg har fått en helt spesiell fred. Det ønsker jeg at andre også skal få oppleve, sier Øyvind.

- Det var umulig å si nei til et slikt tilbud – å seile på et vikingskip og samtidig få være med å takke for evangeliet, forteller Stine.

Mens Stine og Kay Morten mønstrer av vikingskipet i dag og tar flyet hjem, så blir Øyvind med på seileturen tilbake til Norge.

Mission: Thanksgiving  

Kay Morten Aarskog (31) thinks there is too much focus on coffee and small talk in church nowadays. Sunday he arrived in Newcastle on a Viking ship which has sailed all the way from Norway to say thank you to the Englishmen.

 

Sunday at 2 pm the Viking ship Gaia sailed up the River Tyne and was met by several thousand people. During an official ceremony next to the Gateshead Millennium Bridge the Norwegians thanked the English for their contribution in bringing the Gospel to Norway. A letter from the bishop of Oslo, Ole Christian Kvarme, was read aloud and the bishop of Møre, Synøve Midttømme, was present at the event. Bishop of Newcastle, Sir Alan Beith MP and The Lord Mayor were there to receive the thanksgiving. Among those present were also about 300 Norwegians whom already had been in Newcastle for a week, cooperating with around 70 different churches. They have arranged Holiday clubs for children and events for youths, and blessed the local community in various ways.    

Kay Morten, one of the people in charge of this thanksgiving event, was previously a drug dealer and criminal. But his life changed dramatically nine years ago when he met Jesus – the same Jesus as the Vikings met through English monks and priests a thousand years ago. Kay Morten is today base leader at Borgen, one of YWAM Norway`s bases.

- Four years ago, my wife and I were talking about what we wanted to invest our lives in, and we found out that we really wanted to see young people get to know Jesus more, and train them. We want the generation growing up now to know what God and the Bible say about how to live our lives; how to be a good dentist, father, spouse, politician – or how to fight poverty. I believe the same principles which changed the Vikings 1000 years ago also can give hope to Europe today.     

 

Stine Aronsen (18) and Øyvind Walland (18) from Tromsø are two of the youths who have been travelling with the Viking ship Gaia.

-Why did you want to take part in this?

-  Jesus has changed me – and filled me with this amazing peace. I want others to be able to experience the same, Øyvind explains.

- It was just impossible to say no to travel with a Viking ship and at the same time be a part of this event where we say thanks for the Gospel, says Stine.

While Stine and Kay Morten left the Viking ship after the event on Sunday, Øyvind is still aboard, and will return with the ship to Sandefjord, Norway.
